Why do I feel bad asking for a raise?

Question by Mr. President: Why do I feel bad asking for a raise?
I work (construction/home improvements) with one guy, my “boss”. Don’t really like him, don’t talk to him at work…..and he actually complains about it, which annoys me. He’s slow, he’s lazy, always taking a break to smoke while I continue to work. And now I’m starting to drive him to work (in his car) because he’s tired or has a head ache. He’s a p*ss, lol. He’s also pretty ignorant when it comes to a lot of things. I hate listening to his opinions because its border line racist or sexist, etc. I avoid getting into any discussion with him because he’s pretty much a loser.

The thing is, I almost feel like I’m allowing myself to be taken advantage of. He works slow and I only know how to work one speed and that’s fast. And I do just as good, if not better, than him. I save him time and money, but when we get the job done faster, it’s I who makes less and he makes more since I get paid by the day. But I feel bad asking for a raise. Not that I won’t get it, because if i don’t get the raise, I’ll quit and do it on my own. I actually have my license and all that done, my plan was to start a business all along. Which i should probably do anyway..but it’s nice to have work now. But I feel there will be an weird feeling after wards. Should I just quit? I have a number of how much I want and if he doesn’t come to it, I’m done working for him. But why do I feel bad? He’s so stupid, i don’t even like him. I’d be happy not to work with him……but for some reason just feel bad or weird, uncomfortable is the best word, I feel uncomfortable about asking for a raise.

So a couple things, why do i care, should I care….should i ask for a million dollars a day and see how high he’ll pay me, also could see how he reacts or just tell him I’m done working for him? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

maybe you should just open your own construction buss remember this your going to need insurance and that’s the main reason ppl work under someone in this Business. also start taking pics of the jobs you do with him for your own biz
